Angleton's Enma Lopez falls to the ground exhausted, 16.45 seconds after Somer Robinson passes the finish line. Lopez screams in pain after coming in second in the 1600 meter run with a time of 5:51.1. The time was good enough to send her to the regional meet. Moments later, Angleton track staff members put their arms around her and carry her off the rubberized track. "I was so close," said Lopez."It's all right. Second is good; you're going to the regional - prove yourself there," said Coach Breck Koelemay. The coaches laid her on a bench to rest.

Tears start to run down Mark Hayes' face when he thinks about what he would do if he is forced off the Washington Park pier. The broken motor, ripped jib sail, and no power guarantee Mark wouldn't last verylong on the open sea. A detective with the Galveston Police Departmentwants Mark off the pier, and threatens him with tickets if Mark doesnot consent. Mark, whose weekly income is $10 to $30 a week, cannot afford to pay any potential tickets, and this would result in a warrant for his arrest. If arrested, Mark would have to entrust his boat with a transit person, which would most likely end up damaging the boat.

Ceven Prater, 3, a Bowling Green native, sits while the other kids at Kids World Day Care get up to move rooms, while his mother Andi Prater attendants class at Western’s South Campus. Ceven was born with Downs Syndrome, and this is his first year at day care. He is the only special education child at the day care. “It seems like he is in hisown world at times, since he doesn’t understand what we are sayingmost of the time,” said Alicia Boards, a day care worker.

Alyssa’s mother, Rea Dill, was sitting with the family dog Sadie, while watching her daughter. "Itis such a beautiful day. Nice and sunny, no clouds or fog. She was bored and all her friends are on vacation, so we came to the beach,"said Rea.

Susanne Whiting lives with David Heatherly, her two teenage sons, and her 8-year-old daughter. The couple survives on Susanne’s $600-per-month unemployment insurance, David’s $892-a-month Social Security Assistance, and child support payments of $640 per month. Their yearly income of $25,584 is just below the Federal Poverty Guideline of $26,170 for a family of five. The family also receives $500 a month in food stamps.For the city of Galesburg alone, 11.6 percent of the 32,195 people counted in the 2010 U.S. Census are living at the poverty level.Susanne Whiting waits for her appointment with a company representative to see if she can receive a discount on her $600 electric bill. Without assistance from the company it would take Susanne roughly half her monthly income to pay the bill.
