Abridged Portfolio

Susanne Whiting lives with David Heatherly, her two teenage sons, and her 8-year-old daughter. The couple survives on Susanne’s $600-per-month unemployment insurance, David’s $892-a-month Social Security Assistance, and child support payments of $640 per month. Their yearly income of $25,584 is just below the Federal Poverty Guideline of $26,170 for a family of five. The family also receives $500 a month in food stamps.
For the city of Galesburg alone, 11.6 percent of the 32,195 people counted in the 2010 U.S. Census are living at the poverty level.
Susanne Whiting waits for her appointment with a company representative to see if she can receive a discount on her $600 electric bill. Without assistance from the company it would take Susanne roughly half her monthly income to pay the bill.
